Google Ads for Plumbers

Clicks cost over $10 and the median lead runs about $129. Here is how I would set it up so the leads are worth it.

Plumbing is one of the most expensive local searches on Google, and most of that money is decided before anyone clicks: which searches you show up for, what hours you run, and whether you count a 20-second call as a lead.

The short version

Median plumbing search ads pay $10.49 per click and $129.02 per lead. Split emergency and scheduled work into separate campaigns, block job seekers and DIY searches from day one, run Local Services Ads next to Search, and count booked jobs as the conversion you optimize for.

These are medians, so half the accounts pay more. In a big metro the click can cost a lot more than this. Source: LocaliQ, see the sources at the bottom of the page.

Emergency and scheduled work are two different campaigns

Someone searching burst pipe at 11pm and someone searching water heater replacement quote on a Tuesday are not the same customer. One calls the first number they see, the other compares three companies.

I run them as separate campaigns. Emergency gets its own budget, ad schedule that matches the hours you actually answer the phone, and call-first ads. Scheduled work like water heaters, repiping and remodels gets a landing page with pricing signals and a form.

If you do not take night calls, do not run emergency keywords at night. Paying $10 a click to send a caller to voicemail is the fastest way to burn a plumbing budget.

Keywords to bid on, and the ones to block

Start narrow and service based: emergency plumber, drain cleaning, water heater repair, sewer line repair, leak detection, plus the same terms with your city and "near me".

Block the searches that look relevant and never become jobs. My starting negative list for plumbing:

Local Services Ads or Search?

Both, if you qualify. Local Services Ads sit above the regular ads, carry the Google badge, and you pay per lead instead of per click. For plumbers that badge does real work, because trust decides a lot of these calls.

Search still matters for the jobs LSA does not cover well, for your brand name, and for control over landing pages and hours. I treat LSA as the first layer and Search as the layer I can steer.

Track booked jobs, not just calls

A call is not a lead and a lead is not a job. At minimum, count calls over 60 seconds and form submissions. Better, mark which leads became booked jobs and send that back to Google Ads, so Smart Bidding learns what a real customer looks like.

Without that loop the algorithm optimizes for whoever calls the most, and in plumbing that includes a lot of price shoppers and wrong numbers.

When to hand it off: Google Ads management for plumbers

If you would rather spend your time on jobs than on search terms reports, this is the part I take over: splitting emergency and scheduled campaigns, building and maintaining the negative list, matching ad schedules to the hours your team answers, and connecting booked jobs back to Google Ads.

I work by the hour at $50, with no retainer. Most plumbing accounts need a setup session and then a monthly check of search terms, call quality and budget pacing.

FAQ

How much should a plumber spend on Google Ads?
Start from your numbers, not a rule of thumb. With a median cost per lead around $129, a $3,000 monthly budget buys roughly 20 to 25 leads. Divide by how many leads you close to see your cost per job, and compare that to your average job value.
Are Local Services Ads better than Google Ads for plumbers?
They do different jobs. LSA charges per lead and shows the Google badge at the top of the page. Search ads give you control over keywords, hours and landing pages. Most plumbing businesses get the best results running both.
Why are my plumbing leads so expensive?
The usual causes are emergency keywords running when nobody answers, no negative keywords for job seekers and DIY searches, and counting every short call as a conversion so the bidding chases the wrong people.
