The one thing that determines everything

On Google, targeting determines who sees your ad. On Meta, targeting and creative share that job roughly equally. On TikTok, creative is the targeting. The algorithm distributes your content to people who engage with content like yours. If your video looks like something a 28-year-old woman interested in skincare would watch, that is who sees it — regardless of what you put in the audience settings.

This means your creative team is your media buyer. A great video with broad targeting will outperform a mediocre video with precise targeting every time.

What works and what wastes money

Works

  • Someone holding the product, talking to camera
  • First 2 seconds show the product or a strong hook
  • UGC-style — looks like an organic TikTok, not an ad
  • Trending audio in the background
  • Text overlays so it works without sound
  • Before/after, unboxing, product in real use
  • 15 to 30 seconds — tight and punchy
  • Broad targeting and letting the algorithm learn

Wastes money

  • Logo animation in the first 3 seconds
  • Repurposed Meta or YouTube ads
  • Polished studio production with voiceover
  • Static images (TikTok is a video feed)
  • Products that need long explanation
  • Narrow interest stacking on a cold account
  • Running one creative and waiting to see results
  • Checking ROAS after one week

How to structure a TikTok campaign

The setup is simpler than most people expect. One campaign with a conversion objective. One or two ad groups with broad targeting — no interest stacking, no demographic over-filtering. Inside each ad group, three to five creative variations. Let the algorithm run for at least two weeks before touching anything.

Budget per ad group: $50 per day minimum. Below that, the learning phase drags on too long and your CPA data is too thin to read. If you want to test three different creative angles, you need three separate ad groups so the data stays clean.

Creative fatigue is your main operational problem. TikTok users scroll the For You feed multiple times a day. Frequency builds faster than on any other platform. A creative that works well today typically degrades after 7 to 14 days. You need a constant pipeline of new content — not just at launch, but every week as a permanent part of running TikTok Ads.

The creative formula that consistently works for ecommerce

There is no single template, but the structure that works most consistently is: hook in the first 2 seconds, problem or desire in seconds 3 to 8, product as the solution in seconds 9 to 20, clear call to action in the last 5 seconds.

The hook does not need to be clever. It needs to stop the scroll. A person holding a product and saying "I cannot believe this actually works" gets watched. A logo fade-in does not.

User-generated content from real customers converts better than brand-produced content on TikTok, consistently. If you can get 5 to 10 customers to film short product videos, those will outperform anything your production team makes for a fraction of the cost. Brief your customers with a simple outline and let them speak naturally.

Who should run TikTok Ads

Good fit

  • Visual, demonstrable products
  • Price point $20 to $120 (impulse range)
  • Fashion, beauty, home, gadgets, food, fitness accessories
  • Audience under 45
  • You can produce or source new video weekly
  • $1,500 or more per month to spend on testing

Poor fit

  • B2B or professional services
  • Products over $200 (long consideration)
  • Anything that needs explaining
  • You cannot produce new video consistently
  • You need precise demographic targeting
  • Under $1,000 per month to test with

TikTok vs Meta for ecommerce

TikTok reaches people who were not looking for your product and turns them into buyers. Meta does the same, but with better audience data and more mature attribution. TikTok's CPMs are lower and creative fatigue is higher. Meta's targeting is more reliable but more expensive.

For most ecommerce brands the right answer is not one or the other. Run Meta for retargeting and conversion — it is more precise and more mature. Run TikTok for top-of-funnel awareness and demand creation. Then retarget TikTok video viewers on Meta, where you have better control over the conversion step. The two platforms can feed each other.

If you can only afford one, start with Meta. It has a shorter feedback loop and more reliable data for a new account. Come to TikTok once Meta is working and you have creative production capacity.
