Will Shopify's New AI Checkout Kill Your Conversion Rate?

Short answer: your sales, probably not. Your numbers, maybe.

By Tsvi Machluf October 2026 ~3 min read

The short version

Probably not your sales, but quite possibly your measured conversion rate. AI assistants can now buy from Shopify stores for the shopper. Some of those sales will not show up in your ad reports. Count sales from your Shopify orders, and fix your product feed.

What happened

Shopify now lets AI assistants finish the checkout on Shopify stores, including Shop Pay. Before, they could only find products and fill the cart.

The shopper still has to say yes before the order goes through. So it is not a robot spending money on its own.

Is this big yet?

Not yet, but it is growing fast. Traffic from AI tools to US online stores jumped 693% in the 2025 holiday season, according to Adobe, and those visitors bought more often than average. Sales done fully by an AI assistant are still a small slice.

Why your numbers may look worse

Think of a customer who calls your store and orders by phone. You get the sale. Your website stats never see them.

AI shopping can work the same way. The order shows up in Shopify, but Google Ads, Meta and Google Analytics may never see the visit. So your conversion rate drops on paper, and your ads look weaker than they really are. That last part is my reading, not something Shopify has said.

What to do

The power moves to the feed

The store with the clearest product data is the one an AI assistant can understand and buy from. It is also the one Google Shopping shows today. Same fix, two wins.

I offer product feed optimization for Shopify stores

FAQ

Can AI agents buy from my Shopify store now?
Yes, on eligible stores. Shopify announced it in late September 2026. The agent still needs the shopper to approve the order.
Will Google Ads and Meta still see these sales?
Not always. If the sale happens without a normal visit to your site, your ad tracking may miss it. Counting sales from your Shopify orders fixes that.
What should I do first?
Make sure your ad platforms get sales from your Shopify orders, not only from your website. Then clean up your product feed.
